Cases soared in New York, but constitutionality questioned

ALBANY, NY — The use of the red flag law in New York has surged over the past year to allow judges to confiscate weapons from people they deem dangerous.

The rise in cases, according to prosecutors and elected officials, has helped quell gun violence in New York after an alarming spike during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With an expanded law and more attention to it, the growth in cases has been extraordinary after it was barely used when it was first passed in 2019. In 2021, there were 538 extreme risk protection orders issued. A year later, the number soared

GIs, free trade, Australia and the EU – IPwars.com

With the closing stages of the negotiations between Australia and the EU over the proposed free trade agreement almost upon us, the EU has proposed a list of 55 further wine geographical indications it wants to protect.[1] Amongst others, the list includes “prosecco” and “vittoria”. The Department of Agriculture is holding a Public Objections Process to assess the impact of accepting these names.

There are four grounds for potential objection (and only four):

  1. The EU GI name is used in Australia as the common name for the relevant good, including as a type or style of wine.
  2. The EU GI

Fox News Host Confronts Lindsey Graham on GOP’s Abortion Position

Fox News host Shannon Bream pressed Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, on Sunday about whether the GOP’s message on abortion was “costing the Republican Party.”

Anti-abortion advocates celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which last June overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that previously guaranteed reproductive rights to women across the United States, as a major victory. The ruling allowed states to make their own laws regarding the medical procedure, with many Republican-led states quickly moving to either ban or place significant restrictions on abortion in the months following the ruling.

Search of Revere wetlands connected to Harmony Montgomery murder investigation

Law enforcement officials from New Hampshire and Massachusetts are conducting a sprawling search in Revere on Friday in connection with the 2019 murder of 5-year-old Harmony Montgomery.

Manchester police and Massachusetts State Police began searching wetlands along Lynn Marsh Road around 9 am, according to New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella and Manchester Police Chief Allen D. Aldenberg.

“Today’s search was prompted by information developed by investigators,” a Massachusetts State Police spokesman said in a statement.

Eighteen state troopers trained in search operations in difficult terrain and environments, as well as K9 and drone units, are assisting in the

What To Know & Do Upon Separation

Some of the problems that commonly arise relating to finances upon separation include:

  • Hiding of assets
  • Bank accounts being drained
  • Selling off property
  • Bills not being paid (eg mortgages, loans, credit cards)
  • Lack of access to financial resources; or
  • Lack of knowledge about current financial position

When it comes time to finalize how you are going to divide your assets (referred to as a financial or property settlement), it is what is remaining that is shared. So, if money is moved, spent or wasted, what is left over is what can be divided in that settlement. There is no opportunity

Michigan’s 1st state in decades to repeal ‘right-to-work’ law

Supporters of the reply poured into the state Capitol in Lansing earlier this month as the House and Senate took up the legislation before approving it along party lines after limited deliberations.

“It’s a new day here in Lansing,” Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks said prior to the vote. “It’s time to once again make Michigan known as a place where workers want to come.”

Democrats had argued that the law allowed “free riders” to receive union representation without having to pay fees or dues. Without it, unions can now require all workers in a unionized workplace to pay fees

Donald Trump claims he will be arrested Tuesday in Manhattan probe, calls for protests

Former President Donald Trump said he expects to be arrested Tuesday in connection with a Manhattan district attorney investigation and called on his supporters to protest, even as uncertainty remained about whether any legal action was actually imminent.

Trump’s advisers Tuesday made clear they had no specific knowledge of the timing of any possible indictment, even as the former president made the comments on Truth Social, the social media network he founded.

Trump is under investigation for a $130,000 payment he made just before the 2016 election to silence adult film star Stormy Daniels about an earlier affair. The former
