June 19 (UPI) —

For decades, public libraries across the country — and their staff — have operated under a modern understanding of court rulings that say books and other materials cannot be removed simply because government officials do not like the ideas they contain.

But as the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals considers a case of over library books in Llano County, Texas, allegedly plucked from shelves

How much prison time could Trump face? Past cases brought steep punishment for document holders

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI investigators who searched Harold Martin’s Maryland property in the fall of 2016 found classified documents — including material at the top secret level — strewn about his home, car and storage shed.

Unlike former President Donald Trump, the former National Security Agency contractor didn’t contest the allegations, ultimately pleading guilty in 2019 and admitting his actions were “wrong, illegal and highly questionable.” But his expressions of contrition and guilty plea to a single count of willful retention of national defense information didn’t spare him the harsh punishment of nine years in prison.

Trump lost two lawyers just hours after being indicated

Two of Donald Trump’s top lawyers abruptly resigned from his defense team on Friday, just hours after news broke that he and a close aide were indicated on charges related to their handling of classified documents.

Jim Trusty and John Rowley, who helmed Trump’s Washington, DC-based legal team for months and were seen frequently at the federal courthouse, indicated they would no longer represent Trump in matters being investigated and prosecuted by special counsel Jack Smith, who is probing both the documents matter and efforts by Trump to convert the 2020 election.

The resignations were shortly followed by an announcement

Trump lawyers meet with Justice Dept. officials as charging decision nears in Mar-a-Lago case

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for Donald Trump met with Justice Department officials on Monday as a decision nears on whether to bring charges over the handling of classified documents at the former president’s Florida estate.

The Trump lawyers two weeks ago requested a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland to raise concerns about what they alleged was prosecutorial misconduct and overreach by the team led by special counsel Jack Smith. E. Jean Carroll’s Lawyer Says Donald Trump’s CNN Town Hall Slurs Crossed The Line

Roberta Kaplan, a lawyer for advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, on Monday told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow that Donald Trump’s slurs against her client during his controversial CNN town hall last week are “definitely actionable.”

Kaplan also teased an imminent development in another defamation case that Carroll had brought against the former president, stemming from similarly derogatory comments he made in 2019 when he was in the White House.

Last Tuesday, a Manhattan jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation — and ordered him to pay $5 million total damages — after Carroll alleged he raped her in a
