Illinois sheriffs who are refusing to enforce the state’s new gun-control law are engaged in “political grandstanding” and are endangering the lives of residents, Democratic Governor JB Pritzker’s office said on Monday.

Last week, Pritzker signed the Protect Illinois Communities Act, which prohibits the possession of semi-automatic rifles such as the AR-15 and paves the way for expedited universal background checks. A New York Supreme Court judge struck down a mandate Friday that required all health care workers in the state to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, said Gov. Kathy Hochul and the New York State Department of Health had exceeded their authority.

In his ruling, Judge Gerard Neri said the mandate is “null, void, and of no effect” because the state can’t require health care workers to get vaccinations that aren’t required by public health law, which includes mumps, measles and hepatitis.

Law enforcement officers in Georgia arrested a man Thursday who Baltimore Police said shot and killed his co-worker outside of a Maryland Transit Administration facility where they both worked.

According to a news release, Leon Douglas Hill was arrested in Atlanta after nearly three months since the Oct. 18, 2022, shooting of Elaine Jackson, 40.
