DHS Adds Two Entities, Eight Subsidiaries to UFLPA Entity List

On June 12, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), on behalf of the Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force (FLETF), published a Notice adding two entities and eight subsidiaries to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) Entity List, for allegedly working with the government of the People’s Republic of China’s Xinjiang Province to recruit, transport, transfer, harbor or receive forced labor or Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, or members of other persecuted groups out of Xinjiang. The updated UFLPA Entity List is published as an appendix to the Notice. Companies should make sure to regularly review updates to the UFLPA Entity

Debt limit law sets up ‘enormous’ stakes for the 2024 election with deadlines for default, Obamacare and Trump tax cuts

WASHINGTON — The newly enacted debt ceiling law all but assures that the winner of the 2024 presidential election and the next Congress will face another potentially calamitous default deadline soon after taking office.

The measure signed by President Joe Biden over the weekend suspends the debt limit until Jan. 1, 2025, with an additional few months for the Treasury Department to use “extraordinary measures” to pay the bills.

It’s not just the debt ceiling, which is more likely to be contentious if Biden wins re-election. The party that controls Congress and the White House will set the agenda on

Volusia County beaches are now under Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s control

Law enforcement officers with the Volusia Sheriff's Office stop along the county's coastline. Deputies have begun patrolling the coast in anticipation of a law change that would put beach law enforcement in the hands of the sheriff.

Law enforcement on Volusia County’s beaches is officially in the hands of Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 1595 on Thursday, which says that only sheriffs have the authority to maintain law enforcement operations in unincorporated areas of a county (such as the beaches).

Major shift in law enforcement

For years Volusia County government’s Beach Safety division officers have provided law enforcement services on Volusia County’s coast, but now their law enforcement capacity has ended.

In a Thursday night Facebook post, the sheriff’s office wrote that deputies and Beach Safety officers have already been working together closely

Commissioners for His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs v SSE Generation Ltd [2023] UKSC 17 – UKSC Blog

SSE Generation Ltd, the respondent, claimed capital allowances on expenditure incurred when constructing a hydro-electric power station at Glendoe, Fort Augustus in Scotland. Such allowances may be deducted from income for the purpose of calculating a company’s trading profits subject to corporation tax. Commissioners for His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (“HMRC”) disputed certain allowances claimed by SSE for tax years 31 March 2006 to 31 March 2012 on the basis that in their view certain relevant assets did not give rise to allowable expenditure under the Capital Allowances Act 2001 (the “Act”).

SSE appealed to the First-tier Tribunal (the “FTT”).

Indianapolis Indians honor Terry Badger III this week with anti-bullying homestand

INDIANAPOLIS – Terry Badger III would’ve loved the Indianapolis Indians’ next homestand, six games against the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, because he loved the Indians, he loved the Cubs, he loved baseball. Playing it, watching it, talking about it, you name it. He was 13. It’s baseball. You get it.

Terry had been to Victory Field before, you know. His Pee Wee league in Covington – a few miles on this side of the Illinois border – named its teams after the Triple-A International League. Terry played on the Mud Hens when he was 4, so when the Mud Hens traveled

Massive Kewaunee factory farm, DNR reach settlement on manure spreading, water monitoring

MADISON – A massive Kewaunee County factory farm will eliminate its application of liquid manure on fields over the next four years, as part of a legal settlement that allows it to avoid costly installing groundwater monitoring wells.

Kinnard Farms on May 11 agreed to install the manure treatment technology at it’s Casco location. The Department of Natural Resources agreed to the farm’s terms.

The agreement is the latest chapter in long-running tensions between the county’s massive farms, known as CAFOs — or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations — and residents concerned about the impact of the large operations on their

Lawsuit challenging DC noncitizen voting law moves to federal court

The lawsuit challenges the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022, which allows green-card holders and residents who enter or live in the country without legal permission to cast ballots in local races.

After the DC Council passed a bill allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections, a group of voters — including a previous Republican mayoral candidate for the District — sued the Board of Elections. That case has now moved to the federal court system.
