Five defendants were arraigned before the Ota Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, on charges linked to a serious assault on police officers in Ogun State.

The incident unfolded on Oct. 2 in the Bells area of Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, when a patrol team from the Ota Area Command seized a handcuffed individual suspected of carrying a large quantity of Indian hemp. While the officers were moving the detainee, a group armed with cutlasses, stones and bottles ambushed the convoy.

The ambush left several law-enforcement personnel with severe injuries and caused heavy damage to the patrol vehicle. The assailants also succeeded in freeing the detained suspect, who fled the scene before the officers could regain control.

Police officials said they continue to pursue other fleeing accomplices.

Detectives later apprehended the five men identified as Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32. According to the Ogun State Police Command spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi, they face counts of conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The statement did not disclose the accused’s pleas, bail status or the date of the next hearing, nor confirm whether the escaped detainee has been recaptured. Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding officers performing their duties and urged the public to avoid physical confrontations, directing grievances through official complaint channels.
